Good morning, all. A soggy morning. Ah, but the sound of rain - TopicsExpress

Good morning, all. A soggy morning. Ah, but the sound of rain and smell - great way to start off a morning. However, Helga (the St. Bernard) could have been a bit more quick about doing her business. Now, she, I and Gomer are wet. Oy. The storms we were to get yesterday did not show up...but the humidity did. That, combined with the swarms of no-see-ums created a higher misery index. The no-see-um swarms were waiting for me Friday after work. Swarms! The wind wreaked havoc by tossing these swarms with way and that. Now, our homes are coated with this itty, bitty bugs. Lizards would be happy. Okay. Got your morning brew? Check. Are you comfy? Check. Its been a busy week. At first, the Weather Channel warned of cooler temps this coming week...we have a reprieve. One more week of warm temps and some rain. My raspberries need this. I have been covering them when frost threatens because I will not lose this crop like last years. I wept to see those lovely gems get nailed. The bird were happy. Buggers. Sandy & her parents garden is still lush and productive. A neighbor told me she makes fermented turnips. Okay. So, she offered me a taste. Unfortunately, this jar was the one with jalapeno. My tongue ran out of my mouth. Yikes. So, with the okay of Sandy, I brought some turnips and a couple of beets to Penny. The turnips are sliced. The beet is sliced, but it is placed on top of the turnips to keep them in the brine. The trade-off: the recipe. I helped Gary clean the turnips. They will eat the greens and share the greens with a 90 year-old friend. I also brought a couple of kale plants as well. They were excited as could be. The garden still has green peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, corn, cukes, onions, pumpkins (pie and jack-o-lanterns), turnips, beets, potatoes, and herbs. Another week of good weather = more work next Saturday. Well take it. Today, my tomatoes will be done dehydrating. I will experiment with the turnips and see how that works out. Carrots will be cleaned and readied for the freezer. I will get the corn ready for Sunday supper. Sandy did find a recipe for pickling green cherry tomatoes. Anxious to see how that works out,,,that will wait until next year, though, because the little ones knew where they were headed and turned color. For you jetsetters, Oktoberfest 2014 in Munich has started. It ends Oct. 5th, so go get some brew. It all started as a celebration of the wedding between Prince Ludwig (?drums) and Princess Therese on Oct. 10, 1810. 6 million people consumed over 7 million litres of beer. There are 1,200 toilet facilities. Oy. A man got to the front door of the White House this past Friday. I thought a Marine guard was on duty at the entrances of the White House. On another beer note, a Russian company bought Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. Oh. My. Locally, a bass tournament with over $1 million in prizes ended this week-end. Jameis Winston, QB for FL State was benched for last nites game against Clemson. He seems to repeatedly not have good judgment. I hope the Heisman will not find its way into his hands. You know, if ISIS uses social media to do its recruiting...where are the hackers that can shut this garbage down? Since the providers have no compunction about permitting this shit, then now is the time for hackers to step up and do some good against evil. Last I read, the shooter in PA is still on the loose. I wish they did not use the word survivalist to describe him. I am confused as to why the NFL has no clear vision as to how to handle domestic violence. When did society lose the rule we call grew up with - males do not hit a female - much less cold-cock her? Period. No discussion. As to Adrian Petersons discipline of his child. Charles Barkley was right when he said thats how his generation was raised (during a pre-game show last Sunday). Not saying its right. Just a fact. So, now, people are up in arms over his matter-of-factness as to the world he grew up in. Adrian will be dealt with. He will always pay for how he chose to discipline his child. My friend who is now at University of Madison for medical care is doing a tad better. Well take it. Clearly, this has been a wild week. Tomorrow is the first day of Fall. Leaves have started getting ready for the ball. Colors are peeking through the green and getting ready to change into the brilliant ballgowns of colors that sway in the Fall breezes as they dance their way to the ground. So, go forth this first week of Fall and rock it! The waning summer sun makes way for whispers of frosty nights and scurrying to batten down the hatches for the coming winter. Days of canning/freezing/dehydrating are coming to an end and the pantries are waiting to share the bounty through the coming cold days of Winter. The storm windows need to be hung, the summer tools need to be cleaned and put away, put together the bag for winter in the car with extra socks, some handwarmers, extra warm jacket, mitts, some candy bars/jerky, rope to tie to the car and yourself if you have to leave the car to clear snow away from the exhaust pipe when waiting out a snowstorm, neck scarf, blankets, jumper cables, shovel, sand/litter - whatever your winter kit needs to have. Those who use wood should have next years wood stacked - stay ahead by a year because burning green wood does not provide heat. Get manure on the gardens to rot under the blanket of snow. Mark the branches on trees with paint that need to be pruned in January. Clean out garden waste and/or burn it. Put Sta-bil in your lawn mowers after the last mowing. Are the snowblowers ready to suck snow? Make your punchlist of things to get done...check on your neighbors and elderly friends and make sure they are ready for the coming winter. Now, for another cup of brew as I tackle my chores, too.
