Good morning all, so we have been looking at Genesis 16, and we - TopicsExpress

Good morning all, so we have been looking at Genesis 16, and we are looking into each individual and possible motives for them agreeing to have Hagar sleep with Abram. Now it is important to reiterate that these three were not driven by lust, but they all end up being involved in a sort of love triangle. So possible motives are 1. for Abram to make his wife happy and possibly allowing himself to think that this is the promise God was talking about. 2. Sarai wants a child and to make her husband happy thus uses Gods language by saying look behold the Lord has restrained me. She then says go into my handmaid Hagar so that and this is the key wait for it..... That _I_ may have children. 3. Hagar is separated from her people and is a servant, this act would seemingly put her in a much better position, and make her masters happy. Not being driven by the flesh we see that Abram marries Hagar first. Was there a ceremony? How did that conversation go? Just like us there were probably ample times that any of them could have called on the Lord. Additionally it may have been a common practice for men to have multiple wives but not for men from the lineage of Christ. Lamech, Cains great great grandson is the first listed to have more than one wife ( Adah and Zilpah). So this is a precedent being set and yes Abram will take a third wife but it will be after the death of Sarai. We will see what happens as we move through the Bible.. The word of the LORD is communicating this story to us but has earlier given us the information to remind us that Abram, Sarai and Hagar are not the only people in the world. Noahs son Shem, Abrams great grandfather 7x back is still on earth and will be for another 56 yrs. Also Aprhaxad, Saleh, Eber, and Abrams father Terah. So Abram marries Hagar, sleeps with her and she conceives. At this point the word tells us that she now despises her mistress Sarai. Sarai realizes this and goes to Abram stating she has done the wrong thing and says God will Judge between her and him, almost a confession but also kind of like, well your at fault here also and God will judge who is more guilty. It is not explained why Hagar reacts as she does but it definitely will not be the last time we a multiple wife do it. Apparently though Hagar acted out how she felt in order for Sarai to perceive it. But something strange happens, instead of Abram trying to make peace with two women now on the verge of societal warfare, Abram simply gives Sarai her right as master over Hagar back with one word. This is all the ammunition Sarai needs and Sarai uses it harshly enough to put Hagar on the run. Now Monday we will see that God steps in and intervenes and it will be in a way that defies modern day logic. till then have a blessed weekend, remember how much the Lord loves you and try to use it up loving others.....LOL... good luck.
