Good morning and apologies for the lengthy post, It would be great if you could share this post widely as the consultation period ends on 12 July 2013. I would like to bring to your attention proposed changes being considered by the TGA that would restrict complementary therapists (nutritionists, naturopaths, herbalist etc) and the way we practice and our ability to work with our clients. I know many of you may consult with one or more complementary therapists and understand and appreciate the value of our work. I strongly encourage you to review the consultation paper: tga.gov.au/industry/cm-reforms.htm and to contact your local Federal MP to express your concern about the changes. Of particluar note - Provided by BioConcepts Proposal #5 (p42): Higher Risk Medical Devices - From July 2014, practitioners will have reduced access to tools of the trade such as In-Vitro Diagnostic devices for example, bio-impedance analysis, live blood analysis, urine analysis and other in-clinic testing and monitoring devices or tools. Proposal #6 (p42): Advertising directed to Health Professionals – Update the exemption of health professionals in section 42AA of the Act to only recognise health practitioners regulated under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law. This specifically affects those professions not currently regulated under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law such as naturopaths, homeopathic practitioners and herbalists (other than Chinese herbal medicine practitioners registered by the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia). Under option2, advertising to the group of practitioners who are not registered with NRAS, (administered by AHPRA) would be regulated in the same way as advertising to the general public. This will be enforced for all Registered and Listed medicines, including Practitioner Only Products. As you will be considered “general public or layman” with no respect to your years of practice and training, you will not be able to have access to Product Technical Information and Proprietary Diagnostic Systems as a minimum. thanks for your support. Melinda Overall Excerpt from a Biomedica email "WHAT ARE THE CHANGES AND HOW WILL THEY AFFECT YOU? As outlined by the CHC, should these changes be passed as law, from July 2014 practitioners will have reduced access to tools of the trade such as In-Vitro diagnostic services and additionally, changes to advertising of therapeutic goods will mean practitioners will be unable to access advertising and educational material from practitioner only companies. The TGA will no longer recognise Naturopaths and Herbalists as practitioners. Despite years of training at accredited tertiary institutions, you will be considered general consumers of therapeutic goods. WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING ABOUT IT? This calls for unified and considered action from all members of industry. All submissions to the TGA in opposition of this reform will need to be made by July 12th 2013."
