Good morning and congratulations to all New Zealanders who voted, pity more of you didnt but we have a clear an unambiguous result. Why did National win? Well they got more votes didnt they despite an election campaign that was fundamentally a popularity contest between Kim Dotcom and John Key. The left and in paticular Labour have some soul searching to do. Certainly the only knife edge David Cunliffe has is the one being sharpened behind his back but I do hope Labour and the left can lear n one lesson.......A majority of voting Kiwis simply do not believe them. They do not believe that 100 thousand plus Kiwi kids go to school hungry even though they know and are concerned many do. They do not believe our rivers are being increasingly polluted by rapacious and greedy dairy farmers even though they do care about our environment. They do not believe that simply giving more money to beneficiaries is the answer to our social woes even though they are prepared to pay for social spending that encourages people out of welfare and into the workforce. They do not believe our security services are like the old east german stasi mining their meta data and handing it on to the cia in return for a round of golf with Obama for John Key even though they want to live in a country that is as free from state prying into their lives as possible. They do not believe the rich are hellbent on exploiting the poor in dickensian sweat shops even though many look at the very wealthy and wonder if they can ever be like them. They do not believe John Key has horns growing out of his head and is the most corrupt politician ever even though they want some answers about Whaleoil, Jason Ede, Judith Collins et al. They never believed Kim Dotcom, whaledump, Nicky Hager and Laile Hare werent playing dirty politics just like everyone else, even though they wanted to know some of the juicy details. The left needs to understand that middle New Zealand has moved and the way it thinks and votes is light years away from the class warfare and hatred which it still adheres too. Maybe if they can move to we will have more people voting next election.
