Good morning and happy Saturday ........... Shani Dev is one of the most popular deities that the Hindus pray to ward off evil and remove obstacles. The word shani (शनि) comes from Śanayē Kramati Saḥ (शनये क्रमति सः), the one who moves slowly, because Saturn takes about 30 years to revolve around the Sun. Shani is believed to be son of Surya and his wife Chhaya, hence also known as Chayyaputra. He is the elder brother of Yama, the Hindu god of death, who in some scriptures corresponds to the deliverance of justice. Suryas two sons Shani and Yama judge. Shani gives us the results of ones deeds through ones life through appropriate punishments and rewards; Yama grants the results of ones deeds after death. According to myths, Shani oversees the dungeons of the human heart and the dangers that lurks there. Stories about his evil influence abound.It is said that when Shani opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, which clearly denotes the impact of Shani on astrological charts. He is said to have chopped off Ganesha’s head. He is lame and has a limp because his knee was injured when he fought as a child with Yama. He is known as the greatest teacher and well wisher for the righteous as well the greatest punisher for those who follow the path of evil, betrayal, backstabbing and unjust revenge. He is depicted dark in colour, clothed in black,blue flowers and sapphire;holding a sword, arrows and two daggers and mounted on a crow, In Vedic astrology, the planetary position at the time of birth determines the future of a person. So, Hindus fear him the most for ill-luck, as anyone born under his influence is believed to at risk.To appease him, many pay obeisance every Saturday by lighting a lamp with sesame or mustard oil....... Not sure, how much is fact and what part fiction , but for me , each day is special as it contains 24 hours of my gift of life and Saturday a tad bit extra as it leads to Funday ......
