Good morning colleagues. MARKETING ppl are trying to convince me I need to CHANGE THE NAME OF MY BUSINESS. Should I change the name of my business? brutal honesty encouraged. COMMUNITY LIFESPAN DESIGNS (largest client target are physicians, designers and other structural professionals who share my specialized training of being a certified aging in place specialist through NAHB and AARP. background: My initial drive and purpose was to fill in gaps of continuum of care after years of practice and feedback from patients within the community (not acute hosp settings). I had too many barriers to the comprehensive, framework led occupational justice promoting methods of practice. I also happen to have barriers associated with ADHD and realize that point of service documentation to a population of clients who require one on one attention (peds, aging w/dementia, and neuro trauma and progressive conditions) was not at all feasible for me. Perhaps it is only due to my own executive function challenges (slowing my speed of doc. completion) though it seems cohorts without ADHD agree it doesnt seem right or feasible. My solution: build a business to remove barriers. its working! HOWEVER....apparently marketing professionals consider the name, itself, to be a barrier to its growth and overarching mission: COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY. I saw need for out patient clinical services to be offered within more functional settings in communities or residences. MEDICARE reimburses and OT can eval and treat without RN or PT completing admitting eval. Moving on...I am also CAPS certified and have delved into the environmental design arena. LOVE IT. Ive extended beyond aging in place to the scope of all ages. (Lifespan) Looking at surroundings and its impact on occupational performance all ages. (duh... :) ). the third arm is education for obvious reasons. I named the business COMMUNITY LIFESPAN DESIGNS. Ive had it in place for two years and have only been working contracts until now. I am fairly well established in regards to current communication with many business associates. I am also aiming to Promote OT Utilization, sorely under-utilized. The graphic designers say....what in the world is occupational therapy? Furthermore....What is LIFESPAN? haha. I dont blame them for being perplexed and appreciate their candor and wanting me to change the name but should I consider the client base? PLEASE RESPOND, Im going to print as soon as possible. That would be a dramatic step, not to mention costly. Willing if it means growing my passionate mission to mobilize the practice of promoting occupational and social justice. Thats us. We must be the ones to put the wheels in motion. The populations I want to most hit, within the population at large are those who struggle with mental illness or simply within norm but at risk/sensitive low threshold --all ages-- to optimize development and productivity through surroundings from a sensory controlling and enhancing approach (external environment) that impacts inside self (internal environment-motivation vs stress inducing). Thats clinical, educational and can be carried out with physical spatial design recommendations and eventually program development in community (as I take on more OTs to carry out footwork). For now keeping it simple with few design projects, clinical treatment roughly 15 per week and an occasional speaking engagement. sorry for length. Thanks in advance for input. (passionate, can you tell? )
