Good morning/evening friends! How are we all today? So this is going to be my first Mod of the Day post, and todays mod is... The Dragon Combat Overhaul mod by Apollodown (currently unavailable as Apollo is preparing to release version 3 of the Epic Gameplay Overhaul mod pack) I dont know about you, my fellow adventurers, but after getting over the sheer excitement of random dragons ambushing you on your travels, I noticed dragon combat was...well...easy. Dragons fights were often a lot easier than fights with other levelled enemies (looking at the Centurions...) so I went looking for a fix for this minor but sometimes immersion-breaking problem and discovered the DCO. I havent looked back. Immersion is a key element to a good Elder Scrolls game and DCO added it in buckets. No more did I wander the wilds of Skyrim and hear a dragons roar and think to myself well, this is annoying now I wandered in fear of dragons; when I hear ones roar I stop in my tracks and try to find the nearest cover. No longer were dragons easy pickings for any type of character, instead the dragons had the upperhand and they still do at the level cap. The mod adds a heap of new attacks and effects to dragons; their breath attacks are a lot more powerful and they use stronger shouts more often, calling down blizzards and the firestorm Alduin uses after character creation. The most deadly of these new shouts is only used when a dragon is near death and youre not quick enough to finish it off: it can (and in higher levels usually does) call for aid from 1 to 3 additional dragons. Bearing in mind that these new dragons are utter monsters to fight and bringing an elder dragon to the brink of death usually leaves your quiver empty and your stocks of potions depleted, having up to 3 more dragons show up is almost certainly a death sentence. Apollo also added weight to dragons; youd think a dragon would weigh several tons but in vanilla Skyrim when they landed nothing happened if you were nearby, now with DCO when a dragon lands and youre not quick enough to get your shield/ward up the impact will ragdoll you for a few seconds which leaves you defenceless. The same happens when a dragon takes off; the force of its wings stagger you. When a dragons tail hits you, you ragdoll, when its wings hit you, you ragdoll. This is, of all the DCO features the one I love and hate the most. As a melee character being ragdolled every 30 seconds quickly becomes very boring and frustrating, but as a ranged character it just means you cant run in to try and get a special kill. Its not all about trying to kill the Dragonborn though; Apollo added a new power all characters have from level 1 (weird, I know.) This new power is Airstrike, which allows a character to call on any nearby friendly dragons to dive down on an enemy and generally ruin its day more than you already were. Great fun to use. Overall, DCO is a brilliant mod for added difficulty and immersion; I feel Bethesda intended us to fear fighting dragons but somehow got lost on their original release, but DCO fixes this. If you want more challenging dragon fights, get this mod! Hope you enjoyed my first Mod of the Day post and thanks for reading! - Bryn
