Good morning everyone - just trolling through the comments wrought by yesterday eves blog post. godpeopleplace/2014/09/indiscriminate-discrimination-intellectual-lite/ Thanks to any and all who have liked or joined in. In reflection, Id love to add these thoughts to the mix (from FB conversations with Patrick Q Minor and Jeff McFadden) Jeff brought up his fatigue from what he called partisan injection in these kinds of conversations. I agree. Sometimes subjects ought to be simply about the subject. A public conversation about a particular subject made up largely of strangers, should not be seen as an opportunity to hijack the conversation with political party injection. Of course it can be ancillary but only as it actually relates to the subject. I would also add that it is very unhelpful if and when people posting assume that everyone in on the conversation shares the same or similar worldview. In relationship to that, even though I make explicit truth claims regarding Jesus and community in this post, the post is not about Christians. And its not helpful for Christians to post comments reflecting their belief that the subject is all about them. Its a human subject. And take note, if and when any of us do this sort of thing, it only affirms what critics rightly say, and confirms that those commenting have no idea they are standing in the public square, not the sanctuary, temple, mosque, or cathedral. And yes, I do believe to post on FB is to tack a notice up in the public square. The public square belongs to the public and we all have much to learn and relearn about what it means to speak with conviction and civility in the public square. Pat brought up political correctness and how the heart for equality and inclusiveness is good and right but the inability to think clearly is muddling everything. This has been the crux of the whole PC/equality dust-up thats consumed us. As my blog post hopefully makes clear, I dont think one need put aside distinction, nuance, context, etc. etc. etc. in order to be radically pro-equality, anti-discrimination. And I suppose, in my own tiny, tiny Vicar way (a BBC Rev. ref) Im holding Universities to their historical mission and etymology of name. Secondly, this is a people/human issue of great importance. The current tussle has a religious focus (Muslims, Catholics, Christians) but in the big picture it shouldnt be about that. It actually distresses me when people in my religious tribe only focus on their tiny piece of the ideological pie. This is much bigger and involves all people who value freedom and healthy debate out in the neighborhood.
