Good morning everyone, Dr. Harris, the Director of the National Museum of Bermuda has sent us a damage report update and photos, which should answer all the questions PTZtv has received through many viewer emails and Facebook posts. 1. Electricity is currently out at the Commissioners House. The Port Bermuda Webcam can be restored at any time, so check back often. PortBermudaWebcam 2. The sheep are alive and well! 3. The porpoise at Dolphin Quest are fine. 4. Damage is quite extensive at the Museum. If anyone is interested in helping out the Museum, please let us know. We will also post a link for a Museum Recovery Fund being set up where you will be able to make a donation. Thank you for your patience, Lou & David PTZtv Damage Report from Dr. Harris: Within the period of a week, the National Museum was struck by two hurricanes, Fay on Sunday morning 12 October (which went from ‘mild winter gale’ to full-blast hurricane at 6am, without any warning), and dear old Gonzalo on Friday—Saturday 17 & 18 October, monster Cat 3. CURATORIAL DEPARTMENT: Fay, who then removed the western half of the roof from the Curatorial Department, where some water damage was sustained, but has been dealt with. Gonzalo tore most of the other half of the Curatorial roof away. STUDENT HOSTEL: Half of the porch of the student hostel was deposited as a whole on top of the main hostel roof, part of the eastern roof over the bedrooms was also removed in Gonzalo, along with the mens bathroom roof, following the remove of the ladies’ component of same by Fay. The hostel is now unlivable. MAINTENANCE WORKSHOP: The entrance and adjacent roof of the maintenance workshop was demolished by Gonzalo. C. HOUSE APARTMENTS: In Hurricane Fay, part of the roof on the apartments in the north wing of the Commissioner’s House complex was also damaged; fortunately the occupants were all away, but then Gonzalo took more of the roof and there has been much water damage. COMMISSIONER’S HOUSE: the roof of the House held firm during Fay, but Gonzalo took of much of the North Slope off (but no artifact damage in rooms below). A flying object stuck the area with such force as to bend several wrought iron purlins and fracture the associated cast-iron girder of the room truss. OTHER ITEMS: The cottage on the lower grounds kept its roof, but flooded when rain got in; otherwise the lower grounds and Dolphin Quest had no particular damage. The Staff, volunteers and workmen are to be commended for the tremendous job all have done in the unique circumstances of two hurricanes within a week, one which was to be our Curator’s honeymoon.
