Good morning everyone. I hope your holidays are going great and at least a few people this season have lovingly caused you immense (physical) pain in the interest of making you both better skilled. This is a video I did several months ago about boxing for self defense. The initial idea was to introduce a way to learn to throw straight punches and defend straight punches, a drill we called block and counter. One person throws a jab-cross-hook-cross, or 1-2-3-2 while the other person defends with, initially, a parry-parry-block-parry. (I wound up trying to vomit out all of boxing, but just ignore all that.) The beauty of this drill is that you get to see and throw a lot of punches. Once youve become comfortable with the drill you can build a little spontaneity into it by letting your partner occasionally double the jab in the beginning, or turn the hook to the head into a hook to the body. Also, if your partner turns southpaw occasionally the hook will simulate a wide right hook from a right handed person. I suggest going slow bare knuckled, medium speed (at first) with MMA gloves, and full speed with boxing gloves and mouth pieces. It can be best to start with boxing gloves, until you and your partner are comfortable with your defenses. This is great for kids, its great exercise and it desensitizes them to punches. The idea of a punch is scarier than a punch itself, removing that mystery and fear is empowering. Have fun, train hard!
