Elaine decided to refinish it for her daughters room. As she prepared to strip the wood, she noticed that the headboard was full of scratches. She deciphered one scratch as the date her parents were married. Above another date was a name she didnt recognize. A call to her mother revealed the details of a miscarriage before Elaine was born. Elaine suddenly realized the headboard had been something of a diary for her parents! She wrote down all the scratches she could decipher & over lunch w/her mother, she heard stories abt the times when her mother lost her purse at a department store...a rattlesnake was shot just as it was poised to strike her brother...a man saved her brothers life in Vietnam...her sister nearly died after falling from a swing...a stranger stopped a potential mugging. Elaine couldnt strip & sand away so many memories--so she moved the headboard into her own bedroom. She & her husband began to carve their own dates & names. Someday, she says, well tell our daughter the stories from her grandparents lives & the stories from her parents lives. And then the bed will pass on to her. Telling our children stories of our childhood, or things that happened before they were born, gives them a sense of who we are. & it helps them to realize that we were once children too, & can identify w/their pleasures & pains. It makes us more real to them. This is a wonderful story of family & memories. In todays world the family unit seems to be slipping away from us. We need to seek God 1st. & then you will see how joyous life can be. If friends disappoint you & plans go astray & nothing works out in just the right way, & you feel you have failed in achieving your goal, & that life wrongly placed you in an unfitting role... Take heart & stand tall & think who you are, For God is you Father & no one can bar or keep you from reaching your desired success, or w/hold the joy that is yours to possess... But seek 1st. His Kingdom & you will possess The worlds greatest riches which is true happiness..................Helen Steiner Rice I pray Gods blessings upon you all. God loves you, always has, always will.
