Good move, Terry: This project is increasingly becoming Virginia’s answer to “The Bridge to Nowhere.” Smart move by the McAuliffe administration to shut down “the work” and turn off a public spigot which is spending $20 million a month on a project that has not received the necessary environmental permits. I’m very familiar with Route 460, having used it for years as a means to enter/leave the Hampton Roads region, when the HRBT is backed up. It is a rural highway with two lanes in both directions. Not much traffic. Lots of colorful towns. And you can buy the best peanuts in the world when you drive through Wakefield. Yes, I know about “Panamax” and the increased shipping to Norfolk. But is that really going to create sufficient truck traffic to turn Rte. 460 into a financially sustainable limited access highway? And do the residents down there even want that result? Meanwhile, why have we spent $250 million planning a route that will be rejected by the Corps of Engineers for gratuitously wiping several hundred acres of wetlands? This project needs to be halted and re-examined on every level.
