Good news! Yesterday, the FDA announced that food companies will have to take trans fat (also known as hydrogenated oils) out of foods such as peanut butter, french fries, candies, baked goods, etc. Unfortunately, the FDA did not set a deadline. Many food companies knew this was coming and have taken trans fats out of their products over the last decade. Meanwhile, until all food products are rid of trans fat, make sure to read the ingredient list on the food labels and try to avoid buying anything that reads: fully or partially-hydrogenated oil. This is trans fat and it is much more artery-clogging than saturated fat. The food companies can list trans fat as zero on a food product because they can round down the amount to zero if theres less than half a gram of trans fat per serving. So, believe it or not, a product can read zero trans fat, but have hydrogenated oil listed in the ingredient list! The good news is that some products can be swapped out for a natural version that is trans fat-free. For example, Jiff Peanut Butter has trans fat, but not Natural Jiff.
