Good news, boys & girls! Its 1 November 2014 & that means today is World Vegan Day! In honor of the occasion, I share this brief essay by Sherry Colb, JD -- Kind, moral, and good people have always participated in practices embraced by the dominant culture. That is why we can admire people from earlier times whose views on some issues would strike people today as deeply racist or otherwise reprehensible. As historian James Oliver Horton explains, for example, even abolitionists who fought against the institution of human slavery were generally racist, judged by todays standards. Ethical vegans today are similarly able to appreciate both that consumption of animal products is unjust and that good and kind people nonetheless participate in that practice. The problem of violence against animals thus arises not because many people are bad. It arises instead out of social traditions and institutions that prevent us from fully appreciating the implications of our actions and of the values that most of us already hold dear. Vegans and most non-vegans share many of the same beliefs, including most significantly the view that unnecessarily inflicting suffering and death on animals is something we should not do. --Sherry Colb, J.D.
