Good night for Republicans nationally. They got what they wanted: control of the House AND Senate. Haitian born Mia Love from Utah makes history by being the first African American Republican woman elected to the US House. Theyre talking cooperate not stalemate. Im big enough to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope theyll keep their word because they must know voters will be watching as regards the 2016 presidential campaign, which I predict begins today. As a Democrat, I believe many democratic voters didnt vote because many Democratic politicians ran away from, if not ran down, Pres. Obamas accomplishments and independent voters went GOP. In my state of FL, the GOP had a good night, also. Gov. Rick Scott won 47 to 48. Better angels prevailed on most amendments myself and other Floridians voted on. Amend. 1 passed, earmarking billions to preserve Floridas environment. Amen. 2, legalizing medical marijuana was narrowly defeated 57% voted for it, needed 60% plus one to pass. I predict it will be back on the ballot in 2016. Millions in outside big money helped defeat it. Most of it from Las Vegas casino billionaire Sheldon Adelman. FL is safe for now from reefer madness. Whereas as D.C. and Oregon approved it. Alaskas votes arent in but theyre expected to approve it. Joining 20 plus other states. SMH. Amen. 3 was defeated, thankfully. That would have allowed outgoing FL governors to appoint FL Supreme Court justices. Amen. 4 half cent sales tax raise to support public education in my FL county of Brevard passed. Failed in 2012 when I was working as an elementary school bookkeeper and the results were dire: three schools were closed and support positions like mine were threatened with wage and benefit cuts. Glad to see Andy Ziegler reelected to his school board position. Hes listening to voters concerns about transparency and accountability on the part of the school board, lack if which helped defeat this amendment in 2012. VERY disappointed to see my FL Congressional district incumbent do nothing GOP Rep. Posey, prevail against Democrat challenger Gabriel Rothblatt However, Gabe is a hardworking young family man and small business owner with an inspiring, progressive message. I sincerely hope that he runs again, esp given the fact that Florida Today didnt endorse Rep. Posey for the first time this year. Gabe can count on my vote and support when he runs again. Soon, I hope. Some times you win, sometimes you learn . This Democrat is down today but not out. Im going to be heavily involved in voter registration these next two years and holding Democrats and the Presidents feet to the fire for not running on the accomplishments of this administration: lower unemployment, booming stock market, fewer Americans without health insurance, etc. Also, Democrats should never count on support from independents. GOP is better at politics and Democrats are better at policy. We Democrats need to put our game face on and pull the gloves off. The 2016 presidential campaign begins, now!
