Good or bad Sometimes, in interfaith meetings with the Dalai Lama, the question Are we good or evil? comes up. That is such a sad question, as it is the fundament of all beliefs, we should believe we are essentially good, but troubled by defilements. If we dont believe we are good, we are filled with distrust and suspicion, which causes aversion, despise, anger and fear. Even if distrust is sometimes right, its impossible to develop compassion and wisdom if this distrust settles into a continuous state of mind and heart. Of course there is a dark side to our nature. But the idea is, to spread our light over the world and to rein the dark inside ourselves as much as possible, instead of illuminating ourselves and seeing the world as dark and evil. The idea Lenfer, cest les autres has ruled for thousand of years. Its this idea, that leads to polarization and oppression. Yet we could just as well acknowledge that much of what we enjoy today is brought about by cooperation and the wish to contribute for the good of all. If we see this good potential, and make it a leading principle in our individual life, we might be experiencing a world that is more like Paradise, thats us.
