Good rally. Green Left Weekly (greenleft.org.au) was there By Jim McIlroy Sydney More than 200 staff and students rallied outside the Fisher Library at Sydney University on August 13 to protest proposed cuts to the universitys library system. The cuts will involve closures and redundancies for staff. If the university gets its way: All four libraries will lose their staff and collections. Two will become little more than post-grad only PC labs, an information leaflet from the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) explained. There will be 322 less library seating spaces for undergraduate students. 140 library staff redundancies. Staffing changes will make the book shelving mess worse and degrade other services to students and academics, the leaflet stated. Speakers at the rally included Michael Thomson, from the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU); author David Malouf; journalist Bob Ellis; Eleanor Morley, Students Representative Council Educataion Officer; and Grant Wheeler, from the CPSU. Following the rally, staff marched to the vice-chancellors office to present their demands.
