Goodbye Page 3. Page 3 was born into another country. A - TopicsExpress

Goodbye Page 3. Page 3 was born into another country. A country where blacking up and capering about was ideal entertainment for the BBC on a Saturday evening. A country of Mind Your Language, of Barbara Windsors bra flying off in Carry on Camping. The country of discontented winters, British Leyland, the three day week. Of George Best saying that women needed a slap sometimes to be kept in line. A land in which everyone wanted to be in Gary Glitters gang as he secretly preyed on the innocent like a grotesque spangly spider. Most of that stuff disappeared and by the eighties Page 3 was pretty much an anachronism as a form of entertainment or news. Somehow it hung on and made it into the nineties and the noughties where it seemed to be aligned with Lad Culture, and where brilliant, talented female celebrities like Sigourney Weaver and Kate Bush were replaced by rubbish ones like Jade Goody and Katie Price. But finally its gone. Of course, there are still a million ways in which we pointlessly objectify and discriminate against 51% of this country, but its hard not to see it as a major milestone in our hesitant stumble towards equality. See ya.
