Google is rumored to be buying Skybox Imaging, a startup that uses a constellation of 24 low-orbit microsatellites to produce high-resolution imagery comparable to ground-based drones. The microsatellites fly over every spot on earth 4 times/day, and the system can produce 90-second HD video at 30 frames/second. Analytics algorithms on the images can tell you the percent volume change of salt piles, identify ships as oil tankers, very large crude carriers, coastal oil tankers, or no ship at port, can tell what percent full an oil storage tank is, tell what gantry cranes are in use at a port, how many container ships are in port, do environmental health monitoring such as by measuring percent vegetation change monitoring, measure parking lot activity by vehicle count, and so on.
