Google launches internet providing balloon in the Air Google became the first private entity to launch a flying internet hotspot. After 18 months of research and development Project Loon came into realization to be launched from a frozen field in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island. These balloons are filled with helium and beam the internet down to Earth as they sail on the wind. The balloons are still in their experimental stage and are a part of the bigger picture where Google eventually hopes to launch 12 miles (20km) into the stratosphere to bridge the gaping digital divide between the world’s 4.8 billion unwired people and their 2.2 billion plugged-in counterparts. Google was trying to add 1 billion more internet users by providing internet in African based sub-Saharan region to Southeast Asia where TV waves were to be used for relay of internet.
