Gooooooooooood morning, good morning! Lets get this week going with a little bit of Musical Theater History Mondays, shall we? Todays clip is just loverly. Literally. From the film version of My Fair Lady, heres Wouldnt It Be Loverly with Audrey Hepburns original vocals. The role of Eliza Doolittle was of course originated by Julie Andrews on Broadway, but when it came time to make the film, she was not even in consideration for casting. She was understandably upset by this, but didnt hold it against Audrey Hepburn, who ended up taking the part. Hepburn had some vocal training, but was more of an alto, so couldnt sing the majority of Elizas music, written for soprano. The artistic team decided mid-process to have Marni Nixon sing the majority of the vocals for Hepburns songs, as she had done in The King and I and West Side Story before. When Audrey found out about this, she famously and uncharacteristically stormed off the set, but returned the next day apologizing for her unprofessional behavior. For the film, Audrey actually made recordings of all her songs beforehand, then lipsynced to them during filming. Marni would then dub over the video in post-production. Theres no doubt that Marni had better vocal training than Hepburn, but you cant beat the character-based performance of Hepburns here. This is truly a street urchin interpretation of the song in all its rough and tumble sincerity. Thoughts/reacitons/comments? Write us below! (Also, lots more Hepburn tracks from the film are available on youtube.)
