Gosh! A whole spread in Sunday Life on influencers, all young things with Instagram accounts parading what they wear etc...and a big following . One 18 year old says she is an influencer because of her following and her ability to influence how youth think. I impact their lives, she said. Besides not liking the use of impact as a verb, I think its a bit arrogant to make such a claim. I hope the ability to influence how youth think extends only to fashion sense, skincare products and whatever is trendy. One academic says that todays youth and prospective consumers need to carefully consider conflicts of interest, source, credibility and quality of info when considering recommendation made by an influencer...Yup but frankly, its no different from considering a recommendation by a celebrity in ads...except that these ads are proliferating in many forms and by many, many young people. No wonder then that people are racking up credit card debts and we have a consumption culture! Some influencers say they also solve problems of fans who go to them for advice. I wonder if anyone asks them about how to save money, how not to spend unnecessarily and how status isnt defined by how you look or what you wear. Dammit! I am jealous of these influencers....
