Goshikinuma - the Five coloured lakes mysterious multi-coloured tinge of the lake water. Among the over 100 ponds and lakes in the Bandai-kogen Highlands area, perhaps the most fascinating is the group of Goshiki-numa (five-coloured ponds) and lakes, where you can see the wonder of volcanic material dissolving in the water, with time and sunlight changing the colour of the water from shades of green to whitish blue and then to reddish blue. A promenade allows visitors to tour this unique area with its 40 different lakes and ponds, like Bishamon-numa, Aka-numa, Benten-numa, Ao-numa, Ruri-numa, and Yanagi-numa, a walk that takes about an hour. The most popular among the many walking trails in the highlands is the Goshikinuma Walk or Five Coloured Pond Walk. The flat, well maintained nature trail leads mostly through forest and passes numerous ponds along the way, many of which are coloured in various hues of blue. The trail is about four kilometres long, takes about an hour to walk and starts and ends in different locations. Directions From Inawashiro Station, there is about one bus per hour via the eastern trailhead of the Goshikinuma walking trail (Goshikinuma Iriguchi bus stop, 五色沼入口, 30 minutes, 770 yen) to Urabandais town center, from where half of the buses continue on to the western trailhead of the walking trail (Urabandai Kogen Eki bus stop, 裏磐梯高原駅, 35 minutes, 900 yen) and the other half to the Kyukamura Urabandai (Site Station-mae bus stop, サイトステーション前, 45 minutes, 900 yen). From Kitakata Station, buses depart approximately once every two hours to the western trailhead of the Goshikinuma walking rail (Urabandai Kogen Eki bus stop, 60 minutes, 1230 yen), the town center and the eastern trailhead of the walking trail (Goshikinuma Iriguchi bus stop, 65 minutes, 1340 yen).
