Gospel Music Heritage Month #Day16: MATTIE MOSS CLARK (1925-1994) & THE SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN STATE CHOIR Dr. Mattie J. Moss Clark is probably THE biggest name in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC), founded by the late Bishop Charles H. Mason. Dr. Clark has contributed so much to the field of Gospel music and because of her, many awesome songs were birthed and much talent was identified! Some of her most popular compositions include: I Thank You Lord, Climbing Up The Mountain, Salvation Is Free, and Write My Name Above. She is the mother of one of todays most-recognized groups, the Clark Sisters (Jackie, Twinkie, Dorinda, Karen & Denise) and if it wasnt for her, they wouldnt be here today. Also, Mattie Moss Clark is responsible for jump-starting the careers of or bringing attention to several other well-loved names, such as Rose Marie Rimson-Brown, Ora Watkins, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Esther Smith and several others! So much can be said about Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, but one thing for sure, she was loved by many and still is, years after her death. Her works are truly living on and will never, ever be forgotten! Below is a video of Write My Name Above, led by Rose Marie Rimson-Brown during a SW MI State Choir reunion. I suggest you dont listen at work, b/c itll get you in trouble! LOL! Enjoy!
