Gospel Project Parent Connect Oct. 20 Dear Parents, A thank you to Ms. Alice and Ms. Irene for leading Childrens Church. Thank you to Mrs. Kara and Mr. Nat who taught 1st and 3rd grades Sunday School. In Sunday School, our Bible story immediately follows Elijah’s confrontation with King Ahab and the false prophets of Baal. Elijah saw God send fire from heaven. God showed King Ahab, the Israelites, and all the people who worshiped the false god Baal that God is the one true God. Elijah probably felt very happy and victorious, but he was about to face trouble. King Ahab’s wife, Jezebel, was furious with Elijah. Jezebel had already killed many of God’s prophets. After Baal’s defeat at Mount Carmel, Jezebel sent a message to Elijah: she was going to kill Elijah like she had killed God’s prophets. Elijah was afraid! He ran away from Jezebel and hid in the wilderness. Overcome with despair, Elijah begged the Lord to take his life. (See 1 Kings 19:4.) God sent an angel to bring food and water to Elijah while he rested. Then Elijah traveled to Mount Horeb—another name for Mount Sinai—to have a personal encounter with God. God revealed Himself to Elijah in a voice, a soft whisper. Elijah’s circumstances were difficult, but God didn’t leave him. God gave him Elisha, a friend and successor. God assured Elijah that he was not alone; there were 7,000 people in Israel who had not turned to worship Baal. Elijah was God’s prophet, but Jezebel wanted to kill him. God was in control, and He protected Elijah. Jesus is the true and final Prophet. People hated Jesus and wanted to kill Him. God was in control. He used Jesus’ enemies to fulfill His plan to save people from sin. Family Time: Session Title: Elijah Ran from Jezebel Bible Passage: 1 Kings 19 Big Picture Question: How does God help in times of trouble? God promises to never leave or forsake us. Key Passage: 2 Kings 17:13-14 Christ Connection: Elijah was God’s prophet, but Jezebel wanted to kill him. God was in control, and He protected Elijah. Jesus is the true and final Prophet. People hated Jesus and wanted to kill Him. God was in control. He used Jesus’ enemies to fulfill His plan to save people from sin. Family Activity: Take turns talking about times you have been afraid or something you are afraid of. Discuss how remembering the answer to the Big Picture Question could help in times when you are afraid. Write a specific prayer for each family member. Share a time when you were afraid or in trouble and God helped you. It has come to my attention that some of you might enjoy having you neighbors come to your door on Oct 31st. So this year, instead of gathering at church and hoping our friends and neighbors come there, lets stay home and enjoy them coming to our home. What a great opportunity to share the love of Christ when kids come to you for sweet gifts. What is sweeter than Christs gift of salvation? I challenge you to add a little note about Gods love to treats you hand out. I am working on printing out some things or purchasing tracts for you to hand out. Pray that your family will shine the light of Jesus that night. Operation Christmas Child Sunday is Nov. 17. That is the day the 1st-5th graders carry the shoeboxes into sanctuary during offering times of both services. Also, 5th and 6th graders are invited to stay after church that Sunday and work in the collection center. Start filling up your boxes with love, gifts, and PRAYERS. Thanks. Blessings to you all, Kathy B. 󾌸
