Gospel Reflection: April 13, 2014 – Passion Sunday Mt 26:14-27:66 “Morning after morning he opens my ears that I may hear and I have not rebelled. I have not turned back.”(Is. 50) This is a great thought for beginning Holy Week! We will hear many things in Scripture this week - words and sounds very familiar to us. In the Passion we hear Jesus bless the bread and wine – gifting us with the Eucharist. There are promises, betrayals, denials, and confessions of betraying an innocent man. Hosannas that welcomed Jesus a few days ago changed to angry shouts of “crucify him”, the angry crowd chooses to free a criminal rather than Jesus, and Pilate condemns Jesus out of fear. We shudder at the sounds of the scourging, the jeering, and hammering. In the midst of the long and agonizing hours, a strange silence comes over the crowd and we hear Jesus struggling for breath as he prays. He asks the Father to forgive those who crucified him, he entrusts his mother to the care of John, he cries out in the anguish at being abandoned, and finally breathes his last as he completes his Father’s will. These are the sounds and words that will speak to our hearts. What will move us to greater love and fidelity? Will we realize how often in our turning back - we give life to the sounds of the passion that caused pain, denial, condemnation, or will we live the life of love and compassion that Jesus offered us through his passion and death.
