Gospel reflection: April 6, 2014 - 5th Sunday of Lent John 11:1-45 “And Jesus wept.” - Such a short sentence; packed with such a great message. It shouts to us of the humanity and compassion of Jesus - he loved his friend, Lazarus, and mourned his loss and was consumed by the sadness if Mary and Martha. He was also frustrated by those who had come to mourn with the sisters. Some had come as true companions while others had clearly come as spectators to see what Jesus might do; some judged him for not bothering to come sooner. Strange what we do when death enters our world. When my mom died, I had to go out to buy a jacket for the funeral. I stood frozen in the mall, watching people going about their business - laughing, joking, eating, shopping - didnt they know that my world had just fallen apart? My mom was gone! But God’s promise to us is that life does go on, not as it did for the physically-resurrected Lazarus but most assuredly in the graced presence of our God.
