Gospel reflection: Feb. 23, 2014 - 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 5:38-48 In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a teaching that totally contradicts what the Jewish people had known in the Law of Moses for centuries. No longer, “an eye for an eye…” but “offer no resistance…” This teaching is difficult for us who have had Jesus’ teachings for more than 2000 years, what did it sound like to his disciples when they heard it for the first time? Our human nature is such that we want to hurt someone who hurts us, we do not want to give away something we like to a person who has nothing. How surprised we are when someone like Antoinette Bosco a noted writer and speaker can say she forgives those who murdered her loved ones. How many of us struggle to let go of past hurts that cripple us into old age? Forgiveness, turning the other cheek, offering kindness to those who are not like us or who are “beneath our station”… How do we do it? Only with Jesus, only when we understand that only God knows our hearts and only God can judge justly. Easy? Not at all. With God? All things are possible. What is my choice today?
