Gospel reflection: May 18, 2014 – 5th Sunday of Easter Jn 14:1-12 What do you think was going through the disciples’ or crowd’s heads and hearts as they heard Jesus talk to them about His Father’s house having many mansions and that they would know the way and have a place waiting for them? Were they confused and questioning as Jesus continued to say He and His Father were one and that whoever sees Jesus sees and knows the Father too? Thomas and Philip were brave enough to ask Jesus what he meant by all of this. How many in the crowd were afraid to ask Jesus same questions? Did some of the people come to accepting this new message that was so different from what they heard in the synagogue and saw it as the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people? Did some turn away and dismiss Jesus as another misleading prophet, because they could not understand how Jesus could talk about God the Father and he being one? How many people were somewhere in between - wanting to believe this new message and others that could not accept this new teaching? When Jesus responds, He seems a little frustrated, because he asks how long must He be with them. What must Jesus do or say to help them understand what He was trying to teach them about the Kingdom of God? If you were in the crowd, where would you be? Would you have the faith it takes to believe this new message or would you still be questioning Jesus as Thomas and Philip did, or would you just ignore the message and walk away?
