Got a chance to stop in to the new Pouch Savory World Pies in downtown Athens yesterday. Heres the write-up. The owners have done a really nice job on the interior and the concept. Dave and Jane Malcher and their daughter Charmaine Enslin, along with several other members of their family, recently introduced Athens to a very unique culinary enterprise — serving meat pies in downtown Athens. The Malchers own and operate Pouch Savory World of Pies that apparently has drawn customers and rave reviews since it opened December 29 in what Dave Malcher called a low-key start to get settled in before their official opening on January 31. The restaurant and full-bar operates at 151 E. Broad Street, which has served as home to several other eating establishments over the years, most recently Picante’s. Business has been “phenomenal” Dave Malcher said. Pouch’s kitchen offers a dozen different entrée-style pies, all priced at $5.50, and each individual pie could fulfill a hungry diner’s appetite. The pie recipes channel tastes from specific countries or state in one case, and bear playful names such as the Pastriot (America) , Dinky Di (Australia) Pielander (Scotland), Monty Piethon (England), Pork Q Pie (Georgia, U.S.A.) , Mumpie (India), Paddywhack (Ireland), Boykie (South Africa), Hot Chick (Portugal), and “Mo” Rockin’ Veggie (Morocco), Pietanic (Russian), and Pierate (Mediterranean). Dave Malcher said that among the most popular meat pies are the Boykie (tenderloin beef in a cracked black pepper and creamy red wine sauce; the Mumpie (lamb in a spicy, authentic Indian curry sauce); and the Monty Piethon (chicken ion a creamy white wine and mushroom sauce). Originally from Scotland, Dave said he and Jane decided to move to South Africa shortly after they were married to undertake what he described as an “adventure.” Thirty years later, they decided to move to the United States. In researching where they wanted to settle, they looked up some of the best places to live in the U.S., and Atlanta surfaced as an option. Their son David attended the University of Georgia, so that made the choice even easier. The moved to the Atlanta area more than a year ago, but soon realized that unlike their homeland of Scotland, or their second home of South Africa, or even countries like Australia, the Atlanta area did not have any kind of dining outlet to speak of for meat pies. So the Malchers began formulating a business plan that would serve that market. They spent a year working on recipes and the cute names they assigned them, and when they began considering a place to start, Athens seemed like a perfect spot. Though the Malcher family came up with the recipes for the food that Pouch serves, the family hired a chef, Kenny Martinez to handle the kitchen duties at the restaurant. In addition, they have hired a pastry chef. Pouch also serves side dishes (beer battered fries, traditional fries, two different mashed potatoes, and coleslaw) and desserts such as a bourbon bacon chocolate pecan pie. The restaurant usually opens at 11 a.m. and is open late in the night. For hours or more information, call 706 396-6696 or check them out on Facebook.
