Got a phone call this afternoon from a Boy Scout Troop Leader. "Someone" referred him to me. It seems his Troop had hiked into the Cohutta Wilderness from Three Forks via East Cowpen Trail to Rough Ridge, then down toward Jacks River, intending to cross the Jacks and hike back out via Penitentiary Branch and Hemp Top Trail to Dally Gap. The took along a 50 pound German Shepherd. About a mile from the river, (7 miles in) the dog injured a foot and was unable to walk. They wanted to know if I could "pack" their dog out on a horse. You GOTTA be kidding me! Sunny would probably do that, but there was no way I was going to become involved in that...too risky...and they were beyond the horse part of Rough Ridge Trail. I suggested they call the Fannin County Fire Dept. and try to get their basket with a wheel that we use for injuries requiring trail evacuation. POOR judgment!!! PLEASE leave your dog at home when you visit public lands, especially in Wilderness. They are a hazard to wildlife, can cause wrecks with horses and bikes, or become injured or lost. SURELY you can do without your dog for the short period of time you visit there. If not, I suggest you stay home!
