Got a really nice birthday phone call this morning from “Tyrone” with Capital One Credit. He wanted to wish me a happy birthday and while I was on the line, he wanted to set up a payment plan for my overdue visa card. I explained to him that I was a “workaholic in recovery” and was not permitted to discuss financial obligations on Saturdays and/or my birthday. I explained that discussing financial debt was a major trigger for recovering workaholics and that I had been clean for a year and a half with no intentions of a relapse. I explained to him that that I was a songwriter and I would handle my debt as soon as my money was available. As I neared the end of the conversation, I politely ended the phone call with a one-two combo of record label quotes designed to satisfy and intrigue those in financial duress. I said “ Don’t worry about it, the check is in the mail, I’ll have somebody check on it, be in touch!” Works every time! #workaholicinrecovery
