Got punched in the stomach today. Gs teacher in his only general ed class justified failing him with this: Both the aide and myself have worked with Garrett, but he struggles to grasp some of the basic concepts. Garrett usually rushes through assignments, and does not like when hes asked to make corrections or add to unfinished work. He just shuts down, is quiet, or turns his body away while I am talking to him. I talk to Garrett daily, and rarely get a response. Garrett also couldnt find some of his assignments, even though we do all work in class, and this lowered his grade. This is art class. Drawing and painting. Am I missing something here? I couldnt be more depressed by the lack of understanding. Yes, he shuts down. Yes, he is sometimes quiet. Yes, you may not always get a response. Yes, he fails to grasp basic concepts. Its autism.
