Got the new MacBook Pro working. What fun! What the Apple guy - TopicsExpress

Got the new MacBook Pro working. What fun! What the Apple guy recommended didn’t work. Spent 14 hours running Migration Assistant. It crapped out with less than a minute to go. I don’t know whether it actually copied anything, but when I quit the migration, Setup Assistant launched and set the disk up brand new, with none of my transferred data on it. Oh advice from my son, who is a professional at this sort of thing, I ran out to Staples to get a Thunderbolt cable. Plugged it in, set the new machine into target mode, the old machine would not see the new one as an attached disk. For grins, I set the old one into target mode, and it does it by FireWire. No FW to TB adapter, so that ain’t gonna work. So I ended up falling back on my experience in the computer biz. I dug up a 500 GB USB hard disk. Wiped it and used SuperDuper to copy the old machine to it. Booted the new machine using my emergency disk, which is a 64-gig SDHC card named MASH 4077, with a bootable system and a passel of utilities on it. Wiped the internal hard disk, used SuperDuper to restore from the external disk, and rebooted from the internal disk. It runs. I spent the morning adjusting the things that are different between the two machines, like a new license for ChronoSync and then the targets listed in the sync documents; passwords for Gmail; and other similar things. I’m amazed at how light this new machine is, and because its 1 TB disk is actually flash storage, apps and data load before I have time to sneeze. The machine is currently backing itself up to CrashPlan in the cloud, and life is a song.
