Got to see Mike a little while ago. They are keeping him sedated for the rest of the day for a couple reasons. 1. The pain would be too great for him to bare. 2. The Dr couldnt do the new procedure that he wanted to do, which required him going in through each of Mikes sides and lifting his ribs and sternum. There wasnt enough room inside to do that. Thats how bad his chest was sunken in. We knew that. So, the Dr had to go straight in from the front of his chest, removing 4 inches of ribs on each side. Adding wire and pulling his sternum outward. He is not breathing on his own yet. They expect that to happen tomorrow. As soon as they see him take his first full breath on his own and its strong, they will remove the ventilator. The Dr left a couple tubes in just incase he has to reopen him back up for excessive bleeding. There will be some blood but if there is more than 200ml or 2 litres and hour than he has to go back in. There is no damage to Mikes heart or lungs. This surgery was just to help him be able to breathe. The nerves, veins and arteries that are getting pinched in his shoulders are not getting pinched enough for them to do surgery for it as of yet. Thats a good thing. He will be here for 7-9 days. Dr expects to take atleast 2 months to recover. There ya have it. Its been a long day. Still herevat the hospital and will be for awhile yet. If anything changes, I will update.
