Gotta love the horses...all those wonderful, warm and dry - TopicsExpress

Gotta love the horses...all those wonderful, warm and dry structures to shelter themselves and they would rather put on their new winter coats...by winter coats I mean several inches of snow. Typical. In all seriousness, it is healthier for a healthy horse to be able to go in and out as they please. Our healthy horses are blanketed when temps reach zero and always stalled in extreme weather conditions to ensure their safety. High dangerously cold winds and freezing rain are the worst of conditions. A horse should always have a minimum of a solid 3 sided structure with a roof, access to plenty of clean water and good forage as needed. Meeting those requirements is necessary...going above those requirements is wonderful...not providing for or over blanketing/graining an already healthy animal is not ideal. Caring for animals is a balance and knowing the animals in your care from natural behaviors to their own individual personalities is key. Forcing human needs on to your animals is not what is in the best interest of the animals in your care. Let them be who they are. Respect their instincts and provide them what they need to stay healthy and happy. -Elisa Soper Director NARS
