Gotta say, once you get over the initial awkwardness of singular they is wrong? Its really useful! Having a gender-neutral singular pronoun that you can use not just for a hypothetical person but for a person whose gender you dont know or dont care to reveal comes in handy a lot and diffuses a lot of awkward phrases and assumptions. Also, the singular/plural confusion really just doesnt come up much once you get past the ingrained plural assumption. Context almost always clears it up.
