Gotta share this from my frds frd!!! Nice education talk I like this program 講清講楚 because I think the interviewer is fantastic and always asks relevant questions. This particular interview is a MUST WATCH in my opinion if you a) feel strongly about the protest b) understand Cantonese Its 23mins but worth every second. The Professor of Political Sciences from Chinese University manages to dissect some of the key issues in these troubled times with clarity and focus while retaining a neutral stance. For non Cantonese speakers here is a brief summary of some talking points. 1) Addresses external influences and Chinas considerations regarding this 2) Compares democracy with autonomous and more authoritarian type countries 3) Tries to explain why China is sensitive to the demands of the protest and how it may relate to national security 4) Looks at the realistic aim and targets of the protest via the HK government to Beijing 5) He hints at the tragedy of a lack of direction and focus by the original protest leaders 6) Discusses how focusing on HK internal and local civilian issues can maybe generate a softer response from China instead of wholesale political changes 7) Talks about idealism, realism and pragmatism, using examples of Mandela, Gandhi and Martin Luther King in achieving results with civil disobedience 8) Highlights the dilemma of the protesters now regarding staying true to the cause and realizing that the protest may need to end. 9) He talks about the possible dangers of using idealism as an excuse to use methods that are not directly related to the cause 10) He suggests that the morale, participation and mood of the population has ultimately gained from this protest even if the demands are not fully met. Well done to both men on providing a constructive and educational talk for us to enjoy.
