Gov. Mimiko Inaugurates AAUA Governing Council … Urges Members to Complement Govt.’s Efforts, Lead by Example The Ondo State Governor and Visitor to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, CON, on Wednesday last week, inaugurated the newly- constituted Governing Council of the University. The Chairman of the Council and Pro-Chancellor, is Ambassador Oladele Akadiri, OON, while the Secretary to the Ondo State Government, Dr. Aderotimi Adelola; Commissioner for Finance, Chief Akinyele Ogundipe; and Commissioner for Education, Mr. Olajide Adejuyigbe will serve as members. Other members are Prof. Jacob Olupona, Prof. David Iyegha, Dr. Gboyega Ajayi, Dr. (Mrs.) Eunice Oyebade, mni, Mr. Wole Akinyosoye, Alhaji Mohammed Modibbo, Mr. Alex Mbakwe, Barr. Banjo Aiyenakin and Mr. Macaulay Iyayi. The remaining ones, who are internal members of the Governing Council, are the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Rotimi Ajayi; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Francis Oyebade; Prof. (Mrs.) Oluyemisi Adebowale, Prof. C.A. Daramola, Prof. Yomi Dinakin, Prof. Sunday Amuseghan, Prof. Victor Olumekun and Mr. Sunday Ayeerun. Gov. Mimiko congratulated the new members of the Governing Council and urged its members to complement the Ondo Government’s efforts at making AAUA a world-class university. Dr. Mimiko said, “In spite of the success stories recorded in the university in the past five years, a lot of huddles still need to be crossed. I, therefore, urge this new Council to evolve new strategies to further complement the efforts of the State Government at making AAUA, a world-class citadel of leaning. The Council must lead by example and protect the right of everyone in the academic community irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliations.” The Governor said the composition the Council members was based on their records of achievements, experience, integrity, commitment to service and fear of God. The Visitor to the University expressed delight at the numerous achievements of AAUA under the incumbent administration of Professor Femi Mimiko, stressing that the feats were not unconnected with the leadership skills of the immediate past members of the Governing Council, the University Management and staff. He particularly acknowledged the crucial roles being played by the Vice Chancellor in accelerating development of the university both in terms of academic excellence and infrastructure. Gov. Mimiko expressed the hope that the new Council would give the desired direction and develop appropriate policies that would further ensure academic excellence in the university While advising the Council to maintain the extant merit-driven admission policy, which has been on in the university since 2010, Dr. Mimiko added, “The Council should ensure fairness in the recruitment of staff, respect the rule of law at all times, follow due process in handling administrative issues and build harmonious relationship with host community.” He assured the Council of the government’s support, particularly in the area of provision of funds to make the institution a 21st Century University, properly called. Responding, Chairman of the Council, on behalf of the members of the Council, Chief Akadiri, thanked the Governor for the honour and privilege to serve Ondo State and Nigeria in such a vital sector for the development of the nation. Ambassador Akadiri assured that members of the Council would bring their experiences to bear on overseeing and directing the affairs of the University. The Pro-Chancellor said, “We shall work assiduously towards the attainment of the vision and mission of the founding fathers of the university. We will ensure that all the human materials and financial resources will be optimally managed and utilized with maximum prudence and unquestionable integrity such that in the not too distant future, we shall see the realization of a truly world-class university.” The Vice Chancellor, in his remark, appreciated the Governor for the robust support the university had enjoyed in the past five years of his administration, saying, “AAUA of today is a standing testimonial to the commitment of the Governor to higher education.” Prof. Mimiko also thanked the past Governing Council under the leadership of Barr. Dan Nwanyanwu, mni, for contributing immensely to the development of the University. The VC noted that the Council was made up of distinguished individual of compelling background who would provide the needed critical leadership for the university.
