Gov. Ortega marks birthday with jobs fair By Joanne Namnama G. Parrocha SAN FERNANDO CITY, Aug 7 (PIA) - - Jobseekers flocked to the Saint Louis College gymnasium here on August 2 for a special jobs fair. The Department of Labor and Employment Region 1 (DOLE-R1), said 28 local establishments and 12 overseas recruitment firms provided one-stop hiring process. Vice Governor Aureo Nisce, who spoke on behalf of Governor Manuel Ortega, told the jobseekers particularly fresh graduates to look for a career that would best fit their abilities. “To seek a job is not easy these days. Look for challenges, not an easy job,” said Nisce. Nonetheless, he gave the applicants tips for employers to notice their skills and potentials. He said they should be equipped with the basic requirements. “You must have at least your credentials to show and most importantly, you must have the confidence and right attitude to work,” he added. Demylyn Bautista, a Computer Science graduate said that jobs fair gives higher chances for newly graduates like her to be hired because they can hand in their applications to many employers in a day. According to Public Employment Service Offices (PESO) head Charito Dator, of the 1,353 applicants, 103 were hired on the spot where 70 were for local agencies and 33 for overseas. At least 816, who are considered qualified, are still waiting to undergo further application process. They may be called for another interview or for an examination date. The jobs fair, which was jointly organized by the DOLE, PESO, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and the Provincial Government of La Union, was meant to create better job opportunities and reduce poverty incidence in the province and in the Ilocos region. It is also an annual event to mark the governor’s birthday on August 7. Instead of receiving gifts, Ortega gifted residents an opportunity to land a job. (MCA/JNP-PIA1 La Union)
