Government Media Release 14 August 2013 DAVID O’BYRNE MP Minister for Police and Emergency Management Community Thanks Emergency Service Staff and Volunteers The Police and Emergency Management Minister, David O’Byrne, today thanked State Emergency Service duty staff and volunteers and police who have responded to a number of severe weather related calls across the State during the evening and early hours of 13th and 14th August 2013. “The commitment of these people, working through the day and night, to support the community, protect property, clear roads and keep people safe is incredible,” he said. “It is a credit to our many volunteers and staff that restrictions on road access and damage to property during these significant flash flooding and storm events have been minimal.” Minister O’Byrne said that while it is encouraging conditions have abated for the time being the forecasts for later this week are still being monitored and reminded the community to be prepared. “Home and business owners should check guttering and drains as soon as possible and clear or report any debris causing concern to local authorities. “It is particularly important for parents to make sure children do not play in and around flood waters or fast flowing streams. “No-one should enter or drive through flooded roads. “By working together to prepare for these types of weather events we can support and assist the many Emergency Service Staff and volunteers who keep us safe.”
