Government Reacts To TUC Statement on Tariff Increment. Government has noted organised labour’s press conference of Tuesday on the recent tariff adjustments by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). Since the announcement of the new tariffs, government has not been insensitive to the likely effects on Ghanaians and government itself. This explains why government quickly convened a meeting of stakeholders chaired by the Vice President, Kwesi Amissah- Arthur, to discuss how to mitigate the impact of the approved increases. It was agreed at that meeting that a technical working group be set-up to make appropriate recommendations to government on what measures to take to mitigate the impact of the new tariffs on government’s budget, domestic and industrial users of utility services. The technical working group was also tasked in its work to take into consideration the needs of the utility companies and their ability to provide efficient and sustainable services to customers. Government has accordingly requested the working group to present its preliminary report in order that measures can be taken and announced to address the impact of the new tariffs. Government shares the concerns of organised labour that there should be strict adherence to automatic tariff adjustments by the PURC. Government therefore wishes to re-state its commitment to the formula and will work with the Commission and other stakeholders to ensure that this operates efficiently. Government is also committed to ensuring the financial viability and technical competency of the utility companies to guarantee efficient and sustainable supply of services. Government is counting on the long- standing partnership and understanding of its social partners and other stakeholders in this endeavor.
