Government and private sector urged to work together The Chief Executive Officer of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group has called on the government and the private sector to work together for an improved relationship. Johnny Smith says this will integrate business potential, transport and trade opportunities, while creating wealth in the country and the Southern African region as a whole. He says Vision 2030 indicates that the transport sector is critical to the development of all sectors of the economy and the promotion of national and regional integration. As part of the Fourth National Development Plan, NDP-4, transport and logistics have been identified as one of the key sectors to accelerate economic development within the next five years. Smith says Namibia, therefore, has an important role to play because of its strategic location on the west coast of Africa, linking it to the Southern African region, with its more than 260-million consumers. Namibia has three main corridors: the Trans-Kalahari, Trans-Caprivi and Trans-Cunene Corridor, which provide trade routes for importers and exporters between Walvis Bay and neighbouring countries. Smith further says trade volumes along the corridors have grown over the past ten years to more than 700-thousand tonnes per annum. Direct revenue for shipping, rail and road transport amounts to more than 300-million Namibia dollars per annum. Smith was speaking at the just-ended Pan African Parliament workshop on infrastructure development to promote regional trade, held at Walvis Bay. (nbc)
