Government-crafted incentives that keep people impoverished are very real and extremely tragic, as the data in this article demonstrates. Conservatives and libertarians need to do a much better job of talking about this reality from a compassionate standpoint. Too often, the simple dichotomy is that conservatives are cold and uncaring in our distaste for more government involvement, while liberals are heroic and charitable for promoting new anti-poverty programs. This dangerous but emotionally appealing fallacy has led to diminished opportunities for countless otherwise capable people. Until we approach the issue of poverty from an empathetic, rational standpoint, liberals will continue to own the narrative and - yes, I believe unintentionally - keep people trapped in poverty.
