Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the ministry was aware of the increasing number of websites and blogs that made such calls. “The information there could confuse the public,” he said. Jailani said the ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), was working closely with relevant agencies, including the police, on the problem. “Usually, the MCMC will assist in the forensic aspect, if requested by the police,” he said. “That is because matters such as these come under their jurisdiction as it is a criminal offence,” Jailani said after handing out special aid to 300 rubber tappers and smallholders in Hulu Terengganu yesterday. Jailani, who is Hulu Terengganu MP, advised the public to refer to the police and MCMC over any dubious information found on websites and blogs. “Don’t easily fall for such offers,” he urged. “There are certain quarters disseminating such news and offers in order to become popular,” he said. Jailani added that Malaysians should use the Internet wisely instead of interfering in the affairs of other countries. Recently, Wisma Putra disclosed that 15 Malaysians were allegedly killed in Syria after joining the terrorist and militant activities of the purported Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). The claim was reportedly made by a Syrian official based in New York during a press conference on June 18.
