Government supplies off-Grid Rural Communities with Solar Lanterns. 2012 NDC manifesto promised “the launch of an ‘Energy to Every Home’ programme under which universal access will be targeted by 2016”page 52, • All households in rural off-grid communities to receive solar lanterns as a measure to reduce the use of kerosene. • 200,000 solar lanterns will be distributed nationwide by the end of the year. • The programme will cover 16 districts in the country and will run in phases. • 50,000 solar lanterns has already been distributed as part of phase one. • Government has subsidized the prices of the solar lantern at a cost of GH 100. • Households are expected to turn in their kerosene lanterns for the solar lantern at a token fee. • The solar lantern will be increased from 200,000 to 500,000 in the second and third phases. • Government is on course to ensure that every community in the country has electricity by 2016.
