Governor LePage recently announced more welfare reforms. TANF welfare beneficiaries are supposed to look for work, however under the previous Governor Maine was so lenient the state faces upwards of $10 million in federal fines for not meeting federal work requirements. The Governor said this: “Ultimately, the goal is to move people from welfare to work. The best way out of poverty is a good job. The Governor noted this is not his first reform, he previously instituted a 5-year-cap on some welfare benefits. As a result there has been a decrease in nearly half of all TANF cases – a 48.3% decrease in this welfare program so far.
