Governor vows to wipe out poliovirus from Fata PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtu nkhwa Governor Shaukatullah on Thursday said that efforts were being made to protect each and every child from becoming a victim of poliovirus and wipe out every possibility of re-occurrence of new polio cases in the tribal region. “Though emergence of new polio cases in the Bara tehsil of the Khyber Agency, Frontier Region Bannu and North Waziristan Agency is a matter of grave concern, yet we are confident to overcome it with more active and determined support of our polio teams, law-enforcement agencies, political administration, parliamentarians, and tribal elders within shortest possible time,” he told a ceremony to mark the International Polio Day held under the auspices of the Social Sectors Department of Fata Secretariat here at Governor’s House. The governor said high hopes had been pinned on the educated youth to persuade the people in getting children immunised against polio. “Children in the Bara tehsil have already been administered polio drops and now is the time that each and every segment of the society and all stakeholders, particularly the polio teams must join hands and contribute devotedly to ensure that not a single child is deprived of the polio drops,” he added. The ceremony was attended by Fata Scouts and students from tribal areas besides representatives of WHO, UNICEF and Rotary International.Secretary Social Sector, Fata, Aftab Akbar Durrani, representative of WHO in Pakistan Dr Sarfaraz Khan Afridi and former acting vice-chancellor of the University of Peshawar Prof Dr Qibla Ayaz also addressed the ceremony. They acknowledged the selfless working of the jawans of the Pak Army, police and voluntary organizations. “People in Fata are highly receptive towards any initiative meant for their well-being and the only need is that they should be approached and taken along. We will make sure that Ulema, tribal elders and the educated youth are taken on board in carrying out ensuing polio vaccination campaigns more effectively,” the governor said. The working of polio teams, he added, would be thoroughly reviewed after a while and if their functioning did not prove to be satisfactory, they will be replaced with new ones and the same process will be continued.
