Governors secretary tears apart Nagpur University administration on various issues Vaibhav Ganjapure, TNN | Nov 3, 2013, 06.37 AM IST NAGPUR: It seems Nagpur Universitys bad times continue even as the country is in festive mood. Chancellors secretary Vikas Chandra Rastogi, on Saturday, gave a dressing down to Nagpur University pro-VC Maheshkumar Yenkie and registrar Ashok Gomashe over various issues, including the vexed one of 250 banned colleges. The duo had gone to Raj Bhavan in Mumbai in place of vice chancellor Vilas Sapkal after being summoned by chancellor K Sankaranarayanan. Sources from Raj Bhavan confirmed that the meeting between secretary and NU officials lasted for over three hours where explanation was sought on slew of controversies plaguing the university. This included NUs inaction on the roster scam, first exposed by TOI, where over 500 illegal appointments were made by allegedly tampering the records. The VC was summoned to explain on a query from Raisina Hills regarding allegations of bogus degrees being bestowed on the students during NUs 100th convocation where President Pranab Mukherjee is the chief guest along with Sankaranarayanan. But, VC decided to depute Yenkie and Gomashe along with controller of examinations (CoE) Vilas Ramteke to face the music. Later, even CoEs name was dropped. The Presidents office had sought an explanation over a complaint made by former chairman of NU Board of Mass Communication Sunil Mishra who alleged that NU was conferring bogus degrees to the students during historic convocation. He claimed that out of 250 banned colleges operating without a single regular lecturer, the practical/internal/sessional/viva-voce marks of students from 117 of them were awarded by their chairmen and secretaries while brazenly flouting Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994. He warned the Presidents representatives that he will be part of conferring bogus degrees, which were based on illegal marks, to the students. Even former pro-VC GS Parasher had written a letter to the chancellor demanding strict action on the issue. Sources said the pro-VC and registrar gave vague replies and tried to mislead Rastogi stating that colleges operating without teachers had hired services of regular ones from nearby institutions for awarding practical/internal/sessional/viva-voce marks. The chancellors secretary categorically turned down their excuse terming it as unsatisfactory and asked them to reply within a couple of days as he had to reply to Presidents office. Based on this, the Presidents office will confirm whether he would attend the convocation ceremony of November 16. Rastogi also censured NU administration over illegal decision to lift ban from 250 colleges despite the fact that matter was in the court. He warned them against taking any decision that would invite courts contempt. Gomashe refused to comment on the issue stating that he was in Mumbai and would talk to the media after coming back to Nagpur. Yenkies mobile phone was not reachable.
