Govt Urged to Fix Coconut Support Price KOCHI: The Coconut Producer Companies’ Consortium has expressed its concern over the continued downtrend in coconut prices, and urged the government to take immediate steps to procure coconut and fix a support price of Rs 35. The Consortium has also decided to open a manufacturing facility to produce the plastic containers and bottles needed for the integrated packaging of ‘neera’ and its value-added products, being produced by the coconut producer companies. When all companies start full-fledged operation, around 1,000 bottles/containers will be required daily. Each plastic bottle, capable of storing 200 ml of neera, is currently available at a price of Rs 3-4.30, which is affecting the market price of neera. The Consortium observed that the retail price of neera could be reduced if the price of the bottles comes down, which in turn would improve the market of neera. The Consortium also urged the companies to complete their stock acquisition process.
